Thunder and Lightning

Thunder and Lightning

Mom says when it thunders,
I shouldn’t cry—
It’s just God and the angels
Bowling up in the sky.

The lightning’s not scary—
It’s just a light,
So the birdies can find
Their way home in the night.

I’ve tried to understand
With all of my might,
Why thunder and lightning
Give my Mom such a fright.

She clamps the pillow
Tightly over her head,
Shaking and quaking,
Curled up on the bed.

“You made me not afraid, Mom,
So how can this be?”
She said, “My Mom never told
The same story to me.”
